Discus thrower Alekna wins silver at Olympics
Roje Stona of Jamaica was titled the Olympic champion for throwing discuss 70 metres. Matthew Denny of Australia scored discus bronze with a best throw of 69.31 metres.
Andrius Gudžius, another Lithuanian in the discus throw finals, finished in eight with the 66.55 m result.
Alekna won the third medal for Lithuania at the Paris Olympics, following rower Viktorija Senkutė who claimed bronze in the women’s singles sculls on Saturday and the men’s 3×3 basketball team winning bronze on Monday.
The Alekna family now has two of the three best men’s discus throwers in history, with two-time Olympic champion Virgilijus Alekna – the father of 21-year-old Mykolas – now placed third on the world all-time list with his 73.88 metres from 2000, according to World Athletics.
